Fighting The Canker Eating Ghana's Fabric.

Modern slavery also known as human trafficking; under which there is child trafficking, is a canker eating into Ghana’s development. This activity has entangled the rights and freedom of victims especially children, women, and the vulnerable.  Perpetrators of modern slavery have crafted it in an appealing way such that, people even pay for it without realizing.

In order to curb this act which has been in existence for more than a decade, the Ghana Police Service (GPS) as a leading institution in law enforcement, and Government of Ghana passed the Human Trafficking Act, 2005 (Act 694) and established the Anti – Human Trafficking unit (AHTU) to spearhead the agenda of protecting the movement of children and dealing with perpetrators of human trafficking. The unit since establishment, has done tremendously and still pushing for the agenda.

Aftermath of a report released indicating Ghana’s minimal effort in addressing human trafficking, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection(MoGCSP)  in partnership with Ghana Police Service, has organized a three day capacity building workshop for security officers on combating human trafficking. The workshop which started today at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Accra, and ends on Friday 22, July – 2016; seeks to upgrade the skills and expertise of security officers to meet the demands of society.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, Ms. Victoria Natsu – Director of Human Trafficking (MoGCSP), highlighted a few interventions the ministry has put in place as a Government machinery. “The human trafficking management board is working and will soon review the human trafficking plan of action”. She echoed. She then pleaded with friends from the media and security agencies to make issues of human trafficking a priority and advocate against it, since it has now become the second largest trade in the world, fetching people with billions of dollars.

When there is no supply, there will be no demand. Let’s break the demand chain of human trafficking. The appropriate place for a child is the classroom.
